Design Your Own Twitter Theme

By Chloe  //  Graphic Design  //  18 Comments

chloeI’ve finally been dragged into the world of microblogging and signed up to Twitter. It seems to be the buzz word on everyone’s lips at the moment, crashing sites left right and centre with recommendations from Stephen Fry and Pete Cashmore the power of Twitter as a marketing tool is clear.

But so many companies aren’t using it to their full advantage. Whilst searching for people to stalk… I mean follow… I was amazed by the amount of businesses not capitalising on their twitter presence.

Lucy pointed out that CSS Galleries are one of the worst culprits after finding the following list of Twitter profiles for galleries. It takes a good designer minutes to make a striking background, creating a much more professional look to the profile.

Take a look at DDA’s Twitter profile, I did this in a couple of minutes, just by branding it to match the DDA website and including contact details and a short profile about who we are and what we do – this gives it a much more personalised feeling.

Why not download DDA’s Twitter Template and give it a go yourself. Now there’s no excuse not to have a personalised Twitter page

  • Hi I try’d your template with PS CS3 Extended. Works great! But, when I save the file as a JPG I’m not sure what setting size I need to save as. There are options on the High, Medium, Low Plus Standard, Optimized, and Progressive. Can you tell me the best setting to use for Twitter. I keep getting an error when I upload.

  • can u make me a twit bg?

  • Great idea and I was all set to use your template until I checked it on Twitter. It doesn’t work too well for the 1024×600 netbook displays. Here’s a screenshot: http://images12.fotki.com/v215/photos/7/730693/4025690/twitter-vi.jpg :-(

  • Hi Carrie, I had this problem when I first tried uploading my custom twitter background – I think twitter has a maximum file size setting so that you can only upload backgrounds of a certain size. I think as long as you try and make it under 500kb you should be fine. Depending on the size of your image I would recommend Medium or High – it’ll tell you in the bottom left corner how large the file size will be. Hope this helps.

  • Unfortunately Twitter doesn’t give you the ability to upload multiple backgrounds for each screen resolution so it has to be a case of one size fits all. The background here is designed to fit the most common screen resolutions, but if you wanted to you could always crop the image and resize the contact details to fit your screen – just keep in mind that it will look funny on most other displays. I cropped the original image for you and you can download it here. Just right click and save as. :)

  • Thanks so much for the template, saved me a bunch of time figuring out the dimensions, etc. I can’t wait to play with it!!

  • Great post Chloe!

One thing that you have to be wary of is how different size screens crop different areas of the background, especially with the wide variety from the iPad to desktops. I have created a downloadable photoshop template that shows all the safe areas…
